3 Reasons to Invest in Montessori Training in 2022

With the National Early Years crisis, caused by a myriad of things such as Brexit, a severe lack of funding and the impact of Covid; all nurseries are struggling to recruit and retain good staff.

A press release from The National Day Nurseries Association  in 2021 states “the childcare sector across the UK was already suffering a major recruitment and retention crisis before being hit by Covid. Although buoyant employment statistics and rising wages is positive for workers, it will exacerbate the difficulties that nurseries are facing”.

It is now more crucial than ever, to invest in staff training at your Montessori setting. Here’s why:

  1. Become a true Montessori Nursery
Montessori nurseries require Montessori qualified staff to be able to operate as a true Montessori nursery. It simply won’t work to solely have Early Years trained staff in a Montessori classroom with Montessori apparatus. It is essential that the classroom lead has Montessori training and experience, to mentor and support their team to be able to implement a true Montessori classroom. Most importantly the Nursery Manager needs to be Montessori qualified to be able to effectively implement the vision and ethos of the setting to the children, as well as demonstrating this to current and prospective parents.
  2. Hiring new staff is more expensive
Many owners think the cost of training will be expensive however, research shows (link) the average cost of replacing an existing staff member can cost the nursery up to £14,000.00. This cost includes job adverts, agency costs, staff inductions and internal training to help get them up to speed with the nurseries vision and ethos.
  3. Reduce staff turnover and improve staff morale
By investing in training for your current staff members you increase staff morale by creating career progression opportunities from within your team. This has a positive impact on the quality of your setting, by improving efficiencies and reducing staff turnover. We recommend nursery owners issue a 2-year contract with the staff member to pay a percentage of the course cost back if they leave, this way you are protecting your investment in a win-win situation.
